Wikipedia: Looking Ahead

Looking at the *overwhelming* response the Symbian Wikipedia Project's gotten, I was thinking along the lines of working on a new and improved version of the encyclopedia having a greater number of articles.

However, as amazing as that sounds, there are many restrictions littered along the way. For instance, popular Nokia phones like the N73, N80, N93i and E61i all have an upper limit of 2GB when it comes to memory card size. The N95 (along with the newly-released N81), is currently amongst the few that support upto 4GB.

And therein lies the dilemma. The actual English Wikipedia, with tonnes and tonnes of articles, can certainly not fit in such a small space. However, as done previously, a selection of articles can.

Currently, I was working on doubling the capacity of the article count in the Symbian Wikipedia to somewhere around 5000. Size will definitely remain an issue for future releases though.

Which is why I figured it's best to ask what you, the readers, have to say on this i.e. how much space on the memory card do you think should be reserved for an encyclopedia? Do drop a line or two. Your inputs are invaluable!

I think 200MB is reasonable

Appreciate the input William! I'll be releasing a newer version of the encyclopedia shortly, so stay tuned!!

Considering 2GB is the maximum storage available I'd be willing to spare 10% of that for a wikipedia

Sure! Thanks for your hard work! Appreciated that! It's better if an auto search function (similar to those in net search engines) could be done for it instead of the manual one that's currently used.

An interesting idea...but implementing it will take up some time.

And about the 200MB bit...unfortunately, iSilo has it's limits too and can only handle a few thousand articles, which is quite unfortunate.

I'm open to options though...

@maddenx: Thanks for the comment!

@shahab: You're right about that Shahab. Mobipocket Reader certainly is an option. I've been using their Creator Publisher for quite some time now, but I believe iSiloX is much faster and handles webpages better.

Anyway, I'll look into it. Thanks for writing in!

I'm using a N95, with a 8GB memory card....

I willing to give up around 1 GB for articles, either with or without pictures.

I checked Wikipedia's site recently, and it was stated that a full text version without user comments, edit comments, and pictures would require about 3.2GB of space...in XML format.

Thanks for writing in mav! Could you provide a link for that please?

Sure

Here's the index of the database for English Wiki's

http://download.wikimedia.org/enwiki/

Current latest complete Wiki is from Jan 3

Once you click in to 20080103, you can select which kind you want.

Pure text form is the one called

pages-articles.xml.bz2

BTW, I just realized something...

3.2GB is just the "compressed" file

What the real file will be like in terms of size is anyones guess.
