Wikipedia: Version 1.0 Released!

Waiting period's *officially* over everyone! Yes, you guessed it...the Symbian Wikipedia project has yet again scaled to a new height. As promised, this latest release of the Wikipedia, available as a free download for your S60 phone, now incorporates over 8,500 full-color images! And since it's based on the previous release, that works out to about 3.5 unique images per article!

For those with space constraints on their phones, there's also a text-only version of the Wikipedia that you should definitely try out.

Requirements:

  • WinRAR (to uncompress the files). The trial version is available here.
  • iSilo (installed on smartphone). The trial version is available here for all S60 devices.
Key features:
  • Approximately 2050 full-length articles, more than 8,500 full-colour images and over 3.5 million words (equivalent to a 4,000+ page book in text alone)
  • Storage Card & Phone Memory Compatibility
  • Keyword Search
  • Adjustable font sizes and styles
  • Cross Reference Links - tap on a link to easily go to the related article
  • An easy-to-use alphabetical index for all articles
  • Compatibility with ALL UIQ devices
  • Compatibility with ALL S60 devices, from the Nokia 7650 to the N95 :)
Special Notes:

You can either download this as a single file or for convenience, download multiple "dial-up-friendly" parts.

If you're downloading the dial-up version, please note that you need all 15 parts to extract the file. Once you've downloaded all the parts, simply double-click the first part and specify "series-sixty.blogspot.com" (without the quotes) as the password.

Then just click "Extract to" to extract it on your hard drive. You can later send it to your phone via the Nokia PC Suite or beam it via Bluetooth.

As an afterthought, I think it's the images that can make all the difference, for not only do you get something that's visually more appealing and easier on the eyes, but it also takes us a step closer to finding that perfect replacement for an actual encyclopedia. Anyway, comments/suggestions are much appreciated! :)

Thanks for the comment, William! And most definitely, I'll try my best to keep up with the updates. Anyway, do try it out and let me know what you think! :)

Hey Ali, thanks for the comment! And yeah, I can totally relate to your thoughts. I'm glad you liked it.

Ok, the only thing lacking in this mini wikipedia is content I think. Certain "relatively common" stuff can't be found in the wikipedia, although I know very well how painstaking the whole process of extracting it from the original version was. Suggestion: if space or limit is a problem, you can consider splitting the wikipedia into several books like A-G, H-M, ... etc. Cheers, great job!

Yup, that's why I referred to this as a 'step' in the right direction, William :)

A very interesting suggestion too! But honestly, even if the content is split into mini books, I'd still have to set a limit on the size of each book so that the entire collection doesn't exceed, say 1-2 GB?

In any case, I'll try doubling the number of articles in a future release and see where we get from there! :)

Hi TM,

I just wrote an article in my website about your great work offering to carry Wikipedia in our lovely phones. It is in Spanish but I think maybe someone find it useful. Do you have a tutorial explaining how to do it in other languages ?

Congratulations

Taha M said...

Hey Jox! Thanks for your comment. While I don't understand Spanish, I'm sure some people will use that article as a means of inspiration...great work :)

Unfortunately, I haven't got a tutorial yet...but I might probably start work on one if, and when, I get the time, in the near future.

The file is encrypted. Isn't this freeware? If it is, please send me the password at louie_rcp(at)yahoo(dot)com. Thanks.

Taha M said...

Yup, it is absolutely free. The password to the encrypted file is given in the original post.

Awesome work and many thanks for it! I hope you can do also "text-only" versions in future releases (if possible), for users like me with few memory space. Cheers!

Taha M said...

Glad you liked it! I actually started out with a text-only release available here before moving on to one with images.

But I'll definitely keep your request in mind for future releases!

can somebody tell me how i could move my isoli from my phone memory to card memory..actually m using n73 and it doesnt have enough space to store all the files of this application.. plz help me..
thanx in advance

Taha M said...

You can install iSilo wherever you want i.e. it can be installed to phone memory as well as to card memory and will work, regardless of that fact. So, no need to move it.

All you have to do is to send the Wikipedia pdb file to your card memory (Drive E:) and then open it from iSilo. To send the file to your phone, use PC Suite's File Manager.

Let me know if you need any more help.

Finally got iSilo working on my phone (flashed with a different region firmware) and I couldn't wait to see what you have done. This mini-wiki is excellent, and I'm sure it will prove useful many times in the future. Its great for just needing something to read when youre bored too :)

Taha M said...

Nice to hear from you, gammagoblin!

I'm really glad the wiki's working on your phone. Although the selection of articles and images is limited, I'm sure it will prove useful nevertheless...especially when you're bored ;)

If someone were to get an S60 phone with 8-16gb capacity - would it be possible to load one of those 8-9 gig wikipedia dumps?

Dave said...

Bah I can't se if this will be any good to mew after I have downloaded it. I have a Sony Ericsson W810i java based phone and the isilo site seems very vague about what it does and does not work on. Anyone help with a java based document reader that wil work with this?
